A BASTION OF HISTORY AND MILITARY ARCHITECTURE
The Fortress of La Mola, also known as the Fortress of Isabel II, stands majestically on the peninsula of the same name in the east of Menorca. Built between 1848 and 1875, this imposing structure was designed to protect the island from possible British invasion. With its ten fronts divided into land and sea defences, La Mola is a testament to 19th-century military engineering. The land defence was of particular importance, relying on the peninsula's natural cliffs for maritime protection.
During its construction, La Mola faced technological challenges that led to a second phase of modernisation in 1896, adapting it to advances in artillery. Fortunately, it was never attacked and today remains in excellent condition, allowing visitors to explore a vital piece of history.
