Archaeological heritage

Menorca, like the rest of the Balearic Islands, has suffered numerous invasions throughout its history, but all preceded it a unique prehistoric culture in the world. This culture is still present on the island thanks to its megalithic constructions, made up of large stones, being the most significant in the whole world and only you can find them in Menorca.

The most characteristic megalithic monuments of the island are the so-called Talaiots. It seems that you are constructions fulfilled various functions for our ancestors. They worked like watchtowers, defense towers and burial niches. The most characteristic example is Torre d’en Galmés, in Son Bou (Alaior).

Also, the megalithic walls of Torre Llafuda, Santa Rosa, Son Catlar, Biniaiet and Alfurnet are of important archaeological interest.

Among the monuments of a religious nature, stand out the famous Tables. Constructed by two large stones forming a stony “T”. Among the tables discovered are worth mentioning those of Trepucó, Talatí de Dalt and Sa Torreta de Tramuntana, those of Torralba d’en Salort and Torre Llissà Vell in Alaior and the Broken Tower in Ciutadella.

In this line, to emphasize that the most significant funeral prehistoric monument is located in Ciutadella, it is the Naveta d0es Tudons. It stands out for its uniqueness and good preservation.

Museums of Menorca

Menorca has several museums where you can enjoy the geological diversity of the island, the art and the history of the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries, archeology and eighteenth-century painting, as well as contemporary painting, jewelry and liturgical art. There are museums where you can contemplate the tools they used to work in the field or in other old offices that we currently do not even imagine.
