It is customary to eat these pastries known as 'dulces' (pronounced /dulsays/) on public holidays. They are bought in traditional confectioners' shops on the island, in individual trays. After a meal, this tray is placed in the middle of the table for the guests to choose and eat the treats they like best. There are always some stares when one person grabs a pastry that someone else also likes, but here it’s a matter of first come first served. You can also negotiate and divide the cake, although as we are so sweet-toothed this tactic doesn't usually work. Here is a list of the most popular pastries in Menorca.
