Es Pou de Torn

This water extraction system is characteristic of Menorca and is not found on the other islands of the archipelago. It emerged as a response to the new land divisions that began to proliferate from the 18th century. Since then, these wells were installed near houses and roads to supply water to both irrigation systems and the inhabitants of the area.

The water is extracted through an ingenious mechanism that combines two pulleys. The rope is wound and unwound horizontally on an external wheel or winch, powered by the strength of an animal tied to a harness, moving in circles to drive the system.
